What is an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside and uses it to warm your home and provide hot water. Air source heat pumps have become an essential component for sustainable home improvements. By harnessing the natural heat present in the air, they not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also lower your CO2 emissions and your energy bills.

At Bundle, we are on a mission to provide every home in the country with energy-efficient solutions and sustainable improvements that pay back. By upgrading your home with our efficient heat pump technology, we help to ensure a better future for your household, your bank balance, and the planet.

Air Source Heat Pumps | Benefits at a glance

  • Lower energy bills and financial savings
  • A warmer, more comfortable home
  • Greater energy efficiency
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Increased property value

How does an air source heat pump work?

  • Heat absorption: The system uses pipes that are usually placed outside and filled with a mix of water and antifreeze. As the liquid moves through the pipes, it absorbs heat from the air around it.
  • Heat transfer: Once warmed, the liquid flows to the heat pump unit, which is usually outside your home. At this unit, the heat pump turns the liquid into gas using an evaporation process to extract heat.
  • Compression: The gas is compressed which increases its temperature significantly.
  • Heat distribution: The hot gas moves through coils in the heat pump and releases it into your home, providing heat for your radiators and the water in your heating system.
  • Return to the air: The cooled liquid returns outside to gather more heat, creating a continuous cycle that keeps your home comfortably warm and super energy-efficient.
  • Save a Bundle on your bills: It’s time to get cosy and enjoy money back in your pocket. By replacing a standard gas boiler with an air source heat pump, you could save up to £500 a year on your energy bills.

There are a number of government grants available to help homeowners make the switch to greener energy alternatives. These grants can dramatically reduce the costs of installing a renewable energy system, making it more accessible than ever to upgrade your home sustainably.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is designed to make low-carbon heating systems more attainable for homes and small businesses in England and Wales. Under the scheme, you could benefit from an upfront grant of £7,500 to fund the installation of a ground source or air source heat pump

You may be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme if you:

  • Own your property (including a business, second home, or property you rent to tenants)
  • Are replacing a fossil fuel heating system or direct electric storage heaters

In addition, your property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. You can find and check your EPC certificate through the Gov.UK website (https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate

The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) is a government initiative that helps with energy-saving home improvements for low-income households who are off the gas grid.

You may be eligible for the Home Upgrade Grant if:

  • You are a low-income household
  • You are off the gas grid
  • You have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) between D and G
  • You live in a qualifying local authority area

Funding is available for both homeowners and private tenants who meet the criteria. For qualifying households, HUG sets out to address your home’s energy efficiency first, before assessing heating systems and making recommendations for a funded upgrade.

Is a government scheme designed to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions within low-income homes across the UK. Unlike other energy grants, ECO4 puts the onus on some of the larger energy companies to assist eligible households with insulation and heating upgrades and boost energy efficiency.

You have a strong likelihood of securing ECO4 funding if you:

  • Receive qualifying benefits The overarching goal of ECO4 is to ensure low incomes aren’t a barrier to improving the energy efficiency and warmth of UK homes.
  • Live in social housing with poor energy efficiency Under the ECO4 scheme, energy efficiency measures can be provided to social housing with an EPC rating of D, E, F, and G – and where the premises are rented below the market rate.
  • Have eligibility under ECO4 Flex If you don’t receive any of the qualifying benefits but live in one of the country’s least energy-efficient properties, you may still be able to secure funding through ECO4 Flex.

The Green Deal initiative makes it easier for homeowners to upgrade their homes with energy-saving improvements, like solar panels, insulation, and eco-friendly heating systems. Instead of paying for sustainable upgrades upfront, homeowners can borrow the money. Over time, the savings on energy bills help to repay the cost making it more affordable. The Green Deal is available t0 property owners in England, Wales and Scotland.

Green benefits of a ground source heat pump:

Reduced reliance on fossil fuels

Harnessing renewable energy from the earth, ground source heat pumps tap into a natural resource that is abundant and sustainable.

Lower carbon footprint

Cutting back on fossil fuels means doing your bit in the fight against climate change. For the average home, a ground source heat pump can reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 55% (compared to a gas boiler).

Greater energy efficiency

Heat pumps consume much less energy than conventional heating methods. Excellent news for your comfort levels, energy bills, and the environment.

Long lifespan

With regular maintenance, a ground source heat pump should last for 20 years or more. With the world feeling the impacts of climate change, it’s time for us to pull together. At Bundle, our mission is to help every home in the UK save energy, money, and the planet. We are here to guide you and our experts will help you make an informed, hassle-free investment into a greener, more sustainable future.

Frequently Asked Questions

First of all, one of our technicians assesses your property to determine the best location for the unit, considering factors such as airflow, aesthetics, and proximity to existing heating systems.

Once the location is established, the technician will mount the outdoor unit securely on a concrete pad or brackets. Next, pipes filled with a refrigerant mixture are connected between the outdoor unit and the indoor heat pump unit.

Electrical connections are made to power the system, followed by calibration and testing to ensure everything operates correctly. We’ll give you a demo and leave you with instructions on how to operate the system.

The cost of installing an air source heat pump can vary depending on several factors, including the size of the system.

The average installation cost in the UK falls between £6,500 to £11,500.

After the initial outlay, the energy savings that come with the system will outweigh the initial cost of your heat pump installation.

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the air whereas ground source heat pumps absorb heat from the ground outside your home.

Air source heat pumps can be simpler and cheaper to install than ground source, but they can also be less efficient due to the temperature variations of the outdoor environment.

The yearly running costs of an air source heat pump typically range from £685 to £1,550. These costs can vary based on the size of your home and how much energy your household uses.

Cooling using heat pumps is definitely an option but, for most people, it’s a false economy.

In most cases, if you’re looking for a cooling system we recommend standard air conditioning as a straightforward way to cool a space.

All heating products make some noise, but air source heat pumps are usually quieter than fossil fuel boiler flues.

“The solar panels and the renewables side of things were always something we’d considered, It was a big motivation in trying to make the property greener; The bungalow feels very different with the heat pump running, it feels drier and warmer. I would definitely recommend [Bundle] to install it; they installed the whole system in four days!”
