The Challenge Faced by Brimscombe Port Mill

Brimscombe Port is a listed heritage building under the care of Stroud District Council. The building was experiencing issues with its ageing natural gas boilers and conventional radiator infrastructure. These inefficient systems were struggling to deliver reliable space heating and hot water to the building’s occupants.

The council enlisted Bundle to help them transition from outdated methods to innovative, energy-efficient solutions, ensuring both the comfort and preservation of this historical building.

Brimscombe Port is advantageously situated next to the River Frome, offering a natural resource for heating solutions. Recognising this potential, we delivered a forward-thinking design and build plan.

Bundle’s Approach

We proposed a closed-loop water source heat pump system to extract heat directly from the river. This solution would be able to replace the outdated gas boilers entirely and provide efficient heating and hot water for the building.

Following the council’s approval, we installed a state-of-the-art heating system.

Three high-efficiency 60kW NIBE heat pumps now convert water from the River Frome into heat for the building, paired with 750-litre thermal storage units to maintain a steady hot water supply.

In order to feed the system, custom river collectors were designed and built by local partners Renewables First.

We also installed new radiators with updated pipework to ensure efficient heating and flow throughout the building.

The Results

In addition to modernising the system and boosting the comfort and warmth of the building, this project has allowed the council to save on running costs while achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions.

This upgrade not only helps to safeguard Brimscombe Port’s future but also paves the way for a more sustainable and economical approach to preserving its legacy.
