The Challenge faced by Oakham Treasures Museum

Oakham Treasures is one of the largest privately owned museums of retail and farming history in the UK with an impressive display of vintage tractors and farm equipment (which our team had to navigate around very carefully!)

The site was running entirely from electric heating which was both expensive and ineffective at providing enough heat for the whole building.

Bundle carried out a survey to establish better ways to manage the heat demand of the museum. From here, we expertly delivered a comprehensive suite of mechanical and electrical services, handling everything from design and supply to installation and maintenance.

Bundle’s Approach

After thoroughly examining the land and conducting several scientific ground-type surveys, we concluded a ground source heat pump  would be the most efficient solution for heating the museum and keeping everybody warm.

By carefully calculating the heating needs for each room, taking airflow and the fabric of the building into account, we determined the entire place required 235kW to maintain a cosy 18°C, even when outside temperatures drop to -1.6°C.

To meet this demand, we installed four 60kW NIBE heat pumps, in a cascade formation in the ground, which work together seamlessly. We also set up a network of bespoke fan convector units to evenly distribute heat throughout the building, guaranteeing everyone’s comfort.

As an extra bonus, we found out the museum qualified for a special government grant for renewable heating which helped them offset some of the project expenses.

The Results

The installation of the closed loop ground source heat pump has achieved some outstanding outcomes for Oakham Treasures Museum.

Over a projected 20-year lifespan, the museum is set to achieve lifetime savings amounting to £438,500. What’s more, the system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by a substantial 2,930 tonnes.

The museum also benefits from maintaining a pleasant 18°C temperature for both its staff and visitors.
