The Challenge of a large heat load on Parkfield

Stroud District Council is fully committed to achieving carbon neutrality, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of key community facilities like the Stratford Park Leisure Centre, the Museum in the Park and the Pulse. These buildings consume significant amounts of energy, particularly for heating swimming pools and providing other community services.

The council’s ambition is to create spaces that are not only energy-efficient but also comfortable and welcoming for visitors. However, the challenge lay in the ageing gas boilers currently in place, which are highly inefficient and unable to meet the council’s carbon-neutral targets.

Bundle’s Approach

Upgrading these systems is essential for Stroud District Council to reach its sustainability goals and improve the buildings for their community.

For this project, we identified the most effective approach to decarbonise the sites, taking a holistic approach. This involved implementing a combination of solutions across the three buildings, including the installation of:

  • 2,300m2 of wall insulation
  • 1,250kW of CO2 heat pumps
  • 3 x 5m3/s air handling units
  • 928 solar panels

These systems will work harmoniously together in the council’s greater sustainability commitment.

The Results

Projected savings: £46,861 per year on energy bills.

Carbon emissions: An estimated 740.3 kg saved annually.

These systems will play a crucial role in Stroud District Council’s decarbonisation goals. Over the 20-year lifespan of these systems, the council is projected to save £937,220 in energy costs, while more importantly, achieving a reduction of 14,806 tonnes in carbon emissions. The upgrades mark a significant step forward in their commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.

Because of the massively lowered carbon footprint, we’re really looking after future generations who will want to use the leisure centre. I think it’s an amazing opportunity for Leisure services at Stratford Park.” – CLLR Beki Aldam

I think it’s a really positive, encouraging story that you can still switch to renewables in a building such as this.” – Zoe Wilcox, Documentation officer – Museum in the Park
