The Challenge faced by the community Farmstead

Tregovenek, which means “a place of hope” in Cornish, is a community benefit society near Pensilva, Cornwall. Its goal is to create a diverse and thriving farmstead by actively engaging the local community in projects focused on food security and sustainability.

The residential bungalow at Tregovenek faced several heating challenges due to inefficient and outdated storage heaters. These heaters were not only costly to operate but also contributed to damp issues throughout the property.

On top of this, they failed to adequately heat the entire space, leaving half of the bungalow uncomfortably cold.

Bundle’s Approach

To eliminate the cold and damp issues we upgraded the property’s heating system.

First, we made the switch from inefficient electric storage heaters to a modern air source heat pump.  Then, we set up a solar photovoltaic (PV)  array to work hand-in-hand with the heat pump and significantly boost the warmth and energy efficiency of the farmstead.

With our assistance, Tregovenek took advantage of the government’s ECO4 scheme,  which provided funding for these energy-saving upgrades. This meant they could overhaul their heating system entirely free of charge.

The Results

Previously, Tregovenek struggled with cold and damp conditions, but the installation of a heat pump has transformed the bungalow into a warm and cosy space.

The heat pump system is also around 3.5 times more efficient than the old electric storage heaters, boosting Tregovenek’s sustainable credentials and reducing energy bills.

The solar panels have amplified the benefits by cutting carbon emissions and promoting even more cost savings.

These innovations mark a pivotal step towards Tregovenek’s sustainable goals, demonstrating a successful blend of comfort, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
